The Belleville Bulls scored three times on the power play in a 4-2 victory over the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors Friday night in Mississauga. The Bulls power play has now converted seven times in the past two games. Belleville finishes the season with one victory in four games versus the Majors.
The two sides played a very defensive start to the game with few scoring chances for either team. Mississauga was able to open the scoring with just over five minutes remaining in the first period when Derek Schoenmakers took a pass from Ryan Lopes and snapped a hard shot past Bulls goaltender Anthony Peters from the slot. The Majors extended their lead to 2-0 less than a minute and a half later when Jordan Mayer fired a rebound past Peters from the front of the Belleville net. Shots on goal in the first period were 14-8 Mississauga.
The Majors ran into penalty trouble in the second period and the Bulls power play capitalized. Richard Panik cut the lead to 2-1 while on a two man power play advantage less than eight and a half minutes into the period when he took a cross-ice pass from Alex Aleardi and snapped a shot past Mississauga goaltender J.P. Anderson. Shawn Lalonde also assisted on Panik’s 20th goal of the season. Belleville tied the score midway through the second period when Lalonde one-timed a hard shot from the faceoff circle past Anderson just as another two man power play advantage had expired. Panik and Stephen Silas assisted on Lalonde’s 13th goal of the season. Belleville then took the lead just 54 seconds later when Austen Brassard took a nice pass from Aleardi and lifted a shot past Anderson after fighting off a Majors defender. Brett Mackie also assisted on Brassard’s 10th goal of the season and first career game winning goal. Peters was excellent in net for the Bulls during the period to hold the 3-2 lead heading into the final twenty minutes of play. Shots on goal in the second period were 10-9 Mississauga.
Belleville extended their lead to 4-2 just 29 seconds into the third period while on a two man power play advantage when Adam Payerl took a perfect cross-ice pass from Panik and slid a shot into the empty side of the net past Anderson. Lalonde also assisted on Payerl’s 17th goal of the season and sixth in the past three games played. Both teams had chances to score during the remainder of the third period but both Peters and Anderson were strong when called upon. The Bulls penalty killing unit also killed off a pair of late Mississauga power play opportunities to preserve the victory. Shots on goal in the third period were 10-8 Belleville but overall favoured the Majors 32-27.
Peters stopped 30 shots to earn his eighth victory of the season while Anderson made 23 saves in a losing effort for Mississauga. Belleville scored three times on eight power play chances while holding the Majors scoreless on four opportunities with the man advantage. The three stars of the game were Lalonde, Panik, and Aleardi. With the win, the Bulls record improves to 20-39-2-6 while Mississauga drops to 41-20-4-2. Belleville will now wrap up their 2009-2010 season on Saturday night with a road game versus the Niagara IceDogs.

Belleville Bulls - Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors Mar. 12/10 Highlights
Adam Payerl scored four goals to pace the Belleville Bulls to a 5-3 victory over the Oshawa Generals Wednesday night at the Yardmen Arena. Belleville’s power play converted a season high four times in the victory. The Bulls finish the season series with a 4-1-0-3 record versus the Generals.
The Bulls opened the scoring just over seven minutes into the first period when Payerl snapped a loose puck past Generals goaltender Kevin Bailie from the slot. Luke Judson and Bjorn Krupp assisted on Payerl’s 13th goal of the season. Payerl added his second goal of the game while on the power play with less than eight minutes remaining in the first period when he took a cross-ice pass from Shawn Lalonde and fired a hard shot past Bailie. Stephen Silas also assisted on the goal. Following the goal, Michael Zador replaced Bailie in the Oshawa net. Belleville continued to press to extend their lead but were unable to beat Zador. Tyson Teichmann was also excellent in net for the Bulls when called upon in the opening period. Shots on goal in the first period were 21-8 Belleville.
It was the Generals who came out hard to begin the second period, forcing Teichmann to make several good saves. Oshawa was able to cut the lead to 2-1 seven and a half minutes into the period just after a Bulls penalty had expired when Alain Berger took a pass from Jeff Brown and snapped a quick shot past Teichmann from the front of the net. The Generals pressed for the equalizing goal but Teichmann continued his excellent play in net for Belleville. The Bulls restored their two goal advantage with just over two and a half minutes remaining in the middle frame while on the power play when Payerl snapped a low, hard shot past Zador from the faceoff circle to complete his hat-trick. Silas and Lalonde assisted on the goal. Shots on goal in the second period were 14-5 Oshawa.
Payerl added his fourth goal of the game and third on the power play six minutes into the third period when he one-timed a perfect Richard Panik cross-ice pass past Zador from the side of the net. Lalonde also earned his third assist of the game on Payerl’s 16th goal of the season. The Generals cut the lead to 4-2 eight and half minutes into the third period while on the power play when Christian Thomas fired a hard shot past Teichmann from the high slot. Oshawa then got back to within a single goal with just over three minutes remaining in the period when Tony DeHart snapped a shot past Teichmann from the slot. The Generals pressed for the equalizing goal but their comeback hopes were derailed by a late penalty. Michael Curtis rounded out the scoring while on the power play with less than a minute and a half remaining in the game when he shot a loose puck past Zador from the side of the net after Silas had broken his stick on the original shot. Silas and Panik assisted on Curtis’ 19th goal of the season. The assists were the third of the game for Silas and second for Panik. Shots on goal in the third period were 11-10 Oshawa but overall favoured the Bulls 36-33.
Teichmann stopped 27 shots to earn his sixth victory of the season while Bailie and Zador combined to make 31 saves in a losing effort for the Generals. The Bulls finished the game four for seven on the power play while Oshawa converted once in four opportunities with the man advantage. The three stars of the game were Payerl, Lalonde, and Silas. With the win, Belleville’s record improves to 19-39-2-6 while the Generals drop to 24-37-3-2. The Bulls will now finish the 2009-2010 season on the road with games on Friday versus the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors and Saturday against the Niagara IceDogs.

Belleville Bulls - Oshawa Generals Mar. 10/10 Highlights
Belleville Bulls Captain Luke Judson was named the winner of the 2009-2010 Jake Gilmour Memorial Award in a ceremony held prior to the Bulls game against the Oshawa Generals on Wednesday night. The award is named in honour of former Bulls forward Jake Gilmour.
Bulls’ fans vote on the award annually based on the player who best demonstrated the qualities shown by Gilmour while he was a member of the Bulls. Those qualities include pride in the Belleville Bulls jersey, passion for the game, respect for teammates and opponents, and a mutual respect with the fans. Jake’s mother Rose was on hand to present the award to Judson. Other previous winners of the award include Jeff Leavitt, Andrew Gibbons, Matt Beleskey, and Mike Murphy.
Judson is in his second full season with Belleville and leads the team in goals with 29 while adding 15 assists and 93 penalty minutes in 65 games played. The Emo, Ontario native was named Bulls Captain in January.
The Belleville Bulls surrendered two unanswered second period goals in a 4-2 defeat to the Barrie Colts Sunday afternoon at the Yardmen Arena. The Bulls lost both games versus the top ranked Colts this season and are now winless in seven games.
Belleville got off to a good start, as they forced Colts goaltender Mavric Parks into making several quality saves to keep the game scoreless. Barrie then ran into penalty trouble and the Bulls opened the scoring while on a two man power play advantage with just over eight minutes remaining in the first period when Adam Payerl fired a rebound from a Stephen Silas shot past Parks. Shawn Lalonde also assisted Payerl’s 12th goal of the season. The Colts were able to tie the score with less than three and a half minutes remaining in the opening frame when T.J. Brodie was left alone in front of the Bulls net to fire a quick shot past goaltender Anthony Peters after receiving a nice Taylor Carnevale pass. Luke Judson restored Belleville’s lead with just 16 seconds remaining in the period when he was awarded a penalty shot and beat Parks with a pretty deke for his team leading 29th goal of the season. Shots on goal in the first period favoured the Bulls 13-9.
Barrie tied the score just two and a half minutes into the second period when Darren Archibald took a Colin Behenna pass and snapped a shot past Peters from the slot. The Colts then took the lead less than nine minutes into the period when Luke Pither one-timed a Bryan Cameron cross-ice pass past Peters for what turned out to be the eventual game winning goal. Barrie pressed to extend their lead but Peters was excellent in net to keep the score 3-2 heading into the final twenty minutes of play. Shots on goal in the second period were 14-10 Barrie.
The Bulls pressed during the opening moments of the third period but Parks was solid to hold the Colts lead. Barrie extended their lead to 4-2 while on the power play with just over six and a half minutes remaining in the third period when Alex Pietrangelo took an Alex Hutchings pass and fired a shot past Peters on a two man breakaway following a Belleville turnover. The Bulls tried to cut into the lead during the remainder of the period but were unable to beat Parks, as the Colts skated away with the 4-2 victory. Shots on goal in the third period were 8-8 and overall finished 31-31.
Peters stopped 27 shots in a losing effort while Parks made 29 saves in the win for the Colts. The Bulls power play struggled, scoring just once in ten attempts with the man advantage while Barrie converted once in six opportunities with the man advantage. Belleville also scored once shorthanded on Judson’s penalty shot goal. The three stars of the game were Carnevale, Judson, and Pither. With the loss, the Bulls record falls to 18-39-2-6 while the Colts improve to a league best 54-9-0-2. Belleville’s next game is Wednesday night when they host the Oshawa Generals in their last home game of the 2009-2010 season. Belleville Bulls - Barrie Colts Mar. 7/10 Highlights
John Wilson was honoured prior to the Belleville Bulls game Sunday versus the Barrie Colts as the winner of the second annual Medigas Hounslow Season Ticket Award. The award is named in honour of long time Bulls supporter Terry Hounslow and is voted on by Bulls season ticket holders. Last year, George Uddenberg won the first Hounslow Season Ticket Award
Wilson who is affectionately known around the Yardmen Arena as ‘Cymbal Man’ was one of four nominees for the award joining Paul Deryaw, Michelle Moore, and Elton Reid. Nominees were selected based on the following criteria.
1) Must have been a Bulls Season Ticket holder for a minimum of two seasons
2) Must convey the passion of a true fan by sticking with their club through the highs and the lows of the game
3) Must display true passion in everything they do
4) Is enthusiastic and conveys a positive attitude
5) Conveys true community spirit and gives back to our community in many other forms outside their commitment to the Bulls

Former Belleville Bulls goaltender Mike Murphy has been named Kingston’s Amateur Athlete of the Year for 2009. Murphy beat out nine other finalists after a year in which he was named both the OHL and CHL Goaltender of the Year.
Murphy is currently with the AHL’s Albany River Rats where he has been sidelined with broken finger since February. In 20 games played with Albany this season, Murphy has posted a 10-9-0-0 record along with a 2.81 GAA and .917 SV%. He has also recorded two shutouts. The Inverary, Ontario native was selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
Murphy spent three full seasons in Belleville and owns nearly every franchise goaltending record. He became the first back to back winner of the OHL Goaltender of the Year Award in 2008 and 2009 and was named Bulls most valuable player for both the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 seasons. Murphy holds an all-time regular season record of 85-23-5-5 along with a 2.42 GAA, .929 SV% and eight shutouts with Belleville. He also holds the franchise record with 24 playoff victories.
The Belleville Bulls suffered their third consecutive one goal defeat, falling 4-3 to the Sudbury Wolves Friday night in Sudbury. The Bulls finish the season with a 1-3 record versus the Wolves and have now been officially eliminated from playoff contention.
Sudbury opened the scoring just over eight and a half minutes into the first period while on the power play when Steve Reese deflected a Matias Sointu pass past Bulls goaltender Antony Peters. Belleville then enjoyed three consecutive power play opportunities during the second half of the period. The Bulls power play did convert with 56 seconds remaining in the opening period when Richard Panik took a pass from Shawn Lalonde and snapped a hard shot past Wolves goaltender Andrew Loverock from the faceoff circle. Lalonde earned the lone assist on Panik’s 19th goal of the season and third in the past two games. Shots on goal in the first period were 8-5 Belleville.

Luke Judson and Andy Bathgate assisted on Mackie’s fourth goal of the season. The assist extended Bathgate’s point streak to five games. Shots on goal in the second period favoured the Bulls 12-10.
The Wolves restored their two goal lead just 38 seconds into the third period while on the power play when Josh McFadden fired a hard shot between the pads of Peters from the high slot. Belleville again cut the lead back to a single goal with just over six and half minutes remaining in the game while on the power play when Judson tipped a Lalonde shot past Loverock. Stephen Silas also assisted on Judson’s team leading 28th goal of the season. The Bulls then pressed to tie the score but were unable to beat Loverock, as they dropped their sixth consecutive game. Shots on goal in the third period were 13-6 Belleville and overall favoured the Bulls 33-21.
Peters stopped 17 shots for in the loss while Loverock made 30 saves in the win for Sudbury. Belleville finished the game two for eight on the power play while the Wolves converted twice in three opportunities with the man advantage. The three stars of the game were Sointu, Reese, and Judson. With the loss, the Bulls record drops to 18-38-2-6 while Sudbury improves to 24-33-3-3. Belleville will now return home to finish their weekend on Sunday afternoon when they host the Barrie Colts. Belleville Bulls - Sudbury Wolves Mar. 5/10 Highlights
The Belleville Bulls battled back from a pair of two goal deficits but allowed the game winning goal late in the third period in a 4-3 loss to the Barrie Colts Thursday night in Barrie. The Colts are currently the top ranked team in the Canadian Hockey League. Belleville is now winless in their past five games.
It was the Bulls who got off to a quick start, as they forced Barrie goaltender Peter Di Salvo to make several good saves in the opening minutes of the first period to keep the game scoreless. The Colts slowly began to take control of the game for the remainder of the period but Anthony Peters was outstanding in the Belleville net. Barrie did open the scoring while on the power play with just over five minutes remaining in the opening frame when Dareen Archibald slid a rebound past Peters. Shots on goal in the first period were 22-12 in favour of the Colts.
Barrie extended their lead to 2-0 less than five minutes into the second period while on the power play when Nick Crawford one-timed a hard point shot past Peters. The Colts continued to press to extend their lead but Peters continued his terrific play to keep the score 2-0. Di Salvo was also excellent in the Barrie net when called upon during the middle frame. Shots on goal in the second period were 14-9 Barrie.
The Bulls were able to cut the Colts advantage to 2-1 less than three minutes into the third period while on the power play when Richard Panik fired a rebound past Di Salvo from the side of the net. Despite being down two goals, Belleville continued to press and were rewarded with eight and a half minutes remaining in the game when Panik took a pass from Andy Bathgate and snapped a wicked shot past Di Salvo from the faceoff circle. Bathgate earned the lone assist on Panik’s second goal of the period and 18th of the season. The Bulls then tied the score with just over five minutes remaining in the third period when Judson jammed a loose puck past Di Salvo from the side of the Barrie net. Bathgate and Alex Basso assisted on Judson’s team leading 27th goal of the season. The Colts were able to restore their lead less than two minutes later when Kyle Clifford fired a rebound past Peters after the original shot had hit the goalpost. Belleville then took a late penalty and were unable to press to tie the score. Shots on goal in the third period were 15-14 Barrie and overall favoured the Colts 51-35.
Peters made 47 saves in a losing effort while Di Salvo stopped 32 shots in the win for Barrie. Belleville scored once on seven power play chances while the Colts converted twice on three opportunities with the man advantage. The three stars of the game were Clifford, Crawford, and Panik. With the loss, the Bulls record falls to 18-37-2-6 while Barrie improves to 53-8-0-2. Belleville will now continue their road trip on Friday night when they travel to Sudbury to face the Wolves. Belleville Bulls - Barrie Colts Mar. 4/10 Highlights
The Belleville Bulls battled back from a pair of two goal deficits but were unable to complete to comeback, falling 6-5 to the Kingston Frontenacs Saturday afternoon at the Yardmen Arena. The Bulls surrendered four unanswered second period goals in the defeat and finish the season with a 4-3-1-0 record versus the Frontenacs.
Kingston pressed for the opening goal during the early moments of the first period but Tyson Teichmann was excellent in net for Belleville. The Bulls were able to open the scoring with just over nine and a half minutes remaining in the opening period when Alex Aleardi one-timed a Michael Curtis pass past Frontenacs goaltender Tyler Beskorowany from the front of the net. Austen Brassard also assisted on Aleardi’s 14th goal of the season. Belleville extended their lead to 2-0 just over three minutes later when Brassard took an Andy Bathgate pass and fired a hard shot past Beskorowany from the slot. Bjorn Krupp also assisted on Brassard’s ninth goal of the season. Teichmann continued his strong play in the period to hold the two goal lead for the Bulls. Shots on goal in the first period were 17-9 Kingston.

The Frontenacs cut the Bulls leads to 2-1 less than four minutes into the second period while shorthanded when Taylor Doherty took a pass from Joe Pleckaitis and snapped a shot between the pads of Teichmann from the slot. Kingston then tied the score while on a two man power play advantage with nine and a half minutes remaining in the period when Ethan Werek tipped a Brian Lashoff point shot past Teichmann. The Bulls pressed to restore their lead but were unable to beat Beskorowany. Kingston took their first lead of the game with just over one minute remaining in the middle frame when Corey Durocher made some beautiful moves around Belleville defenders before lifting a backhand past Teichmann. Michael Farrell gave the Frontenacs a 4-2 advantage with just seven seconds remaining in the period when he snapped a hard shot past Teichmann from the faceoff circle. Shots on goal in the second period were 13-13.
Anthony Peters replaced Teichmann in the Belleville net to begin the third period. The two sides played a wide open third period that featured many quality scoring opportunities for each team. The Bulls cut the lead to 4-3 a minute and a half into the third period when Aleardi one-timed a cross-ice pass from Bathgate past Beskorowany. Brassard also assisted on Aleardi’s 15th goal of the season and second of the game. Bathgate then had a glorious chance to tie the score less than five minutes into the period but was stopped by Beskorowany on a penalty shot. The Frontenacs restored their two goal advantage less than eight minutes into the third period when Derek Froats slid a rebound past Peters. Belleville again cut the Kingston lead to a single goal with seven minutes remaining in the third period when Kyle DeCoste one-timed a Luke Judson pass past Beskorowany from the slot. Richard Panik also assisted on DeCoste’s 19th goal of the season. The Bulls then tied the score with just over two and a half minutes remaining in the third period when Aleardi completed his hat-trick by jamming a loose puck past Beskorowany from the side of the Frontenacs net. Brassard and Julian Luciani assisted on Aleardi’s 16th goal of the season. The assist completed Brassard’s second four point game for Belleville this season. Despite four goals in the period, both Peters and Beskorowany were outstanding, as each goaltender made several great saves. Shots on goal in the third period favoured the Frontenacs 19-16.
In overtime, Kingston enjoyed an early power play but were unable to convert. The Frontenacs did end the game with two minutes remaining in the extra session when Werek deflected an Erik Gudbranson pass past Peters from the slot for his second goal of the game. Shots on goal in overtime were 4-1 Kingston and overall favoured the Frontenacs 53-39.
Teichmann and Peters made 26 and 21 saves respectively in the loss for Belleville while Beskorowany stopped 34 shots in the win for Kingston. The Bulls power play failed to score in five chances while the Frontenacs converted once in six opportunities with the man advantage while also scoring a shorthanded goal. The three stars of the game were Aleardi, Doherty, and Brassard. With the overtime loss, Belleville’s record moves to 18-36-2-6 while Kingston improves to 32-26-1-3. The Bulls will now look to rebound from the loss next week when they travel to Barrie to face the Colts on Thursday night and then continue their road trip in Sudbury the following night. Kingston opened the scoring less than eight minutes into the first period when Cameron Odom’s point shot deflected off Michael Fine and past Belleville goaltender Anthony Peters. The Frontenacs then extended their lead to 2-0 with less than six and a half minutes remaining in the opening period when Ethan Werek tipped a Michael Farrell shot past Peters. The Bulls were able to cut the lead to 2-1 while on the power play with less than two minutes remaining in the period when Alex Aleardi tipped an Alex Basso point shot past Kingston goaltender Tyler Beskorowany. Julian Luciani also assisted on Aleardi’s 13th goal of the season. Shots on goal in the first period were 12-7 in favour of the Frontenacs.
Mitch Lebar gave Kingston a 3-1 lead just two minutes into the second period when he jammed a rebounded between the pads of Peters. Following the goal, Peters was replaced in the Belleville net by Tyson Teichmann. The Bulls pressed to cut into the Frontenacs lead but were unable to beat Beskorowany. Kingston extended their advantage to 4-1 with seven minutes remaining in the middle frame when Derek Froats one-timed a cross-ice pass from Farrell past Teichmann. Shots on goal in the second period were 9-8 Kingston.
