OTTAWA, ON - The Belleville Bulls will have to wait another day for their first win of 2012 as the Ottawa 67's had no shortage of offence in a 7-2 victory. Dalton Smith had three goals while Shane Prince added a pair as the 67's continue to cruise in the Eastern Conference.
Ottawa worked the trade wire on Friday, acquiring former OHL first overall pick John McFarland from the Saginaw Spirit in exchange for rookie first round pick David Perklin and a 4th round pick in 2014.
The 67's didn't need McFarland in the lineup however, as they paced themselves to a 4-0 lead after one period on a pair of goals by Shane Prince, Tyler Toffoli's 31st of the year shorthanded and an additional marker from Smith.
John Chartrand was helpless in the Belleville net, facing 11 scoring chances on 13 first period shots as the 67's were executing as usual and made the Bulls pay for their mistakes.
Dylan Corson tried to spark his mates at 12:29 of the opening period as he squared off with 17 year-old rookie Sean Callaghan and exchanged blows with his slightly bigger combatant.
The second period presented a vastly different Bulls group. Despite a four goal deficit, the Bulls didn't show any signs of quitting as Austen Brassard stretched his current point streak to 9 games on a rocket wrist shot at 17:09 on the powerplay. Brassard's 20th of the year sent the water bottle on top of Michael Nishi's net airborne as the Bulls clawed their way onto the scoresheet.
Another bright spot for the Bulls in the jaws of defeat was rookie Alex Carnevale who picked up his second goal of the campaign on a fine display of quick hands in the slot. After entering the offensive zone, Jason Shaw dished cross-ice for Carnevale who blew past Jake Cardwell and stuffed a backhand shot through the legs of Nishi at 3:13 of the third as the Bulls were within two.
Two however, would be the closest they would come as the 67's slammed the door shut with an additional three goals. Dalton Smith teamed up with his linemates Sean Monahan and Tyler Toffoli on back-to-back goals and defenceman Cody Ceci did his best Austen Brassard imitation, blowing a shot over the shoulder of Chartrand and sending the water bottle for a ride.
The 7-2 final is the 10th consecutive game the Bulls have lost at the J. Benson Cartage Centre dating back to September 26th, 2008 when Luke Judson and Stephen Silas were both in their rookie seasons with the club.
The 67's took a clean sweep of the three stars as Smith, Toffoli and Prince were acknowledged in that order.
Belleville's latest acquisition had an assist in his debut wearing the horns. Joseph Cramarossa played alongside Gaunce and Brassard, sending 3 shots on goal and registering a pair of scoring chances.
The Bulls were without rookie defenceman Jordan Subban who was given a night's rest after an impressive World Under 17 Hockey Championship tournament in Windsor over the past two weeks. Subban received a healthy amount of powerplay time and represented the province well in returning to Belleville with a bronze medal.
The Bulls aim to get back on the winning track Saturday night at the Yardmen when the Ottawa 67's close out the home-and-home set. George Burnett returns to the helm for the Bulls after his tour of duty with the Canadian National Junior Team that won bronze in Calgary this past week. Ottawa goaltender Petr Mrazek, who was named goaltender of that very same tournament is expected to return to the lineup for the 67's while John McFarland makes his debut.
Game time on Saturday is 7:05pm. For ticket information, contact the Bulls Box Office at 613-966-8338.
