KINGSTON, ON - Former Wellington Dukes forward Darcy Greenaway had a pair of goals and an assist as he helped his new squad to a 5-3 victory over the Belleville Bulls on Friday night at the K Rock Centre in Kingston.
Offence dominated the first period, as the two teams came out knotted at two. Netminders on both sides of the equation surrendered goals they'd likely have you know they want back.
First, Brendan Gaunce continued his hot preseason, sneaking a puck past 6 foot 6 Russian giant Igor Bobkov in goal for the Frontenacs. Gaunce's third goal of the preseason and seventh point came on an assist from Garrett Hooey who has impressed many with his intensity and display of speed early.
Kingston struck back at 650, as sophomore forward Dylan Staples beat John Chartrand on an unobstructed wrist shot from a fair distance out. Chartrand however, would rebound by making several fine saves in the moments to come.
Belleville struck shorthanded at 12:22 as speedy rookie Alex Carnevale got on the board, outwitting Bobkov whose puckhandling skills proved no match for the determined 16 year-old as he stripped the netminder of the puck and put it into the gaping cage.
The Fronts brought themselves back into the picture at 13:07 as former Wellington Duke and Odessa native Darcy Greenaway beat a Bulls defender down the right wing and tucked the puck past Chartrand on the backhand.
Belleville outshot their rivals 13-11 through twenty minutes, as both sides took their share of minor penalties.
The second period saw some chippy play early on as several post-whistle skirmishes took place between the two teams. For the most part, the Frontenacs kept the Bulls away from high quality scoring areas throughout the second, and outshot Belleville 15-12.
Greenaway continued taking a toll on the Bulls offensively, pitching in on a Petr Beranek goal at 13:41. The Czech forward who came over from the Barrie Colts in the offseason beat his former teammate Chartrand, slamming in a puck with authority off a rebound from the left of the goal mouth.
Greenaway scored his second of the night minutes later at 16:13, this time on assists from Beranek and Derek Froats. Greenaway managed to beat slip his stick under that of Bulls defender Ryan Zupancic, slipping the crisp cross crease feed from Beranek past a sprawling Chartrand.
Kingston led Belleville 26-25 on the shot clock headed into the third period in front of a sparsely populated K Rock Centre.
The Bulls got into penalty trouble early in the third period, as the Frontenacs had themselves a five-on-three in the opening five minutes. Rookie Ryan Hutchinson made no mistake, finding the back of the net through traffic on a low point shot.
Down 5-2, the Bulls had one last effort later in the third, as offensively gifted blueliner Jordan Subban hammered a puck that beat Bobkov from the left point. Luke Judson and Garrett Hooey helped out with assists at 13:04.
Belleville outshot Kingston 11-6 in the third period and 36-32 on the night, but the Frontenacs played with a great deal of energy and intensity in front of the home crowd and came away with a 5-3 win.
Bulls rookie Mack Lemmon was throwing his weight around all night, drawing the attention of several Kingston players throughout the game. Frontenacs forward and Belleville native Jason Shaw was stirring up trouble all night as well, and could serve as a prominent agitator in Kingston this season.
Time will tell if the intensity of a physical third period carries over to the backend of the home and home on Saturday.
The Bulls drop their first contest of the preseason, seeing their record drop to 2-1. They'll get another crack at the Fronts on Saturday night when the two teams meet up again, this time at the Essroc Centre in Wellington. Game time is 7:00pm.
