BRECLAV, CZE - Typically the best of friends throughout the hockey season, Brendan Gaunce and Daniil Zharkov found one another on opposite sides of the battle lines on Thursday in the Czech Republic. Gaunce's crew of Canadians would need to get past Zharkov and the Russians to advance to the semifinals where they'd face the United States.

Although Russia didn't make the task an easy one, the Canadians would prevail 4-2 on the back of Kerby Rychel's two markers. Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds goaltender Matt Murray was also a presence between the pipes, making 28 saves including a robbery of Zharkov in the second period.

Zharkov, a rookie in Belleville this past season, has a goal and 4 assists in 5 tournament games. Gaunce has 2 goals and an assist in 5 games for Canada.

Team Canada now meets Team USA on Friday at 1:00pm while the Russians square off with Germany on Saturday. Friday's Canadian game can be seen on TSN.
