Shawn Matthias Scores His First Two NHL Goals

Belleville Bulls forward Shawn Matthias scored his first two NHL goals on Saturday night for the Florida Panthers in a 5-3 loss to the Washington Capitals. The Panthers called Matthias up earlier this week and the Mississauga native made his NHL debut Friday night in New Jersey.  Matthias was given a loud ovation at the Yardmen Arena during the Bulls victory over Sarnia when it was announced the he had scored twice for Florida.

Matthias scored his first NHL goal early in the second period when he tipped the puck past Capitals goaltender Brent Johnson. He then added a second goal just four minutes later when he tipped another puck past Johnson on the power play. Matthias finished the game with 21:18 of ice time and had four shots on goal. He was also named third star of the game. One night earlier, Matthias enjoyed an impressive debut in a 2-1 Panthers victory in New Jersey, logging 11:24 of ice time and finishing with two penalty minutes. He also won four of five faceoffs against the Devils.
