Bulls Comeback to Defeat Storm 2-1

Bryan Cameron had a goal and an assist in the Belleville Bulls 2-1 victory over the Guelph Storm Friday night in Guelph.

The Belleville Bulls scored two unanswered third period goals en route to a 2-1 victory over the Guelph Storm Friday night in Guelph. As was the case last Saturday in Belleville, the two sides played a very tight checking game with few scoring chances. The win extends the Bulls lead to two points over the Oshawa Generals for first place in East Division.

It was the Storm who held the edge in territorial play during what turned out to be a scoreless first period but they were unable to generate many quality scoring chances and when they did, Edward Pasquale was very strong in the Belleville net. The Bulls were unable to generate much offence themselves during the opening frame, as they were out-shot 9-3.

The two teams continued a tight checking defensive battle during the second period, as neither side was able to open the scoring throughout the early stages of the middle frame. Both the Bulls and Storm enjoyed multiple power plays during the period but could not capitalize, as both Pasquale and Storm goaltender Thomas McCollum were very good in goal for their respective sides. Guelph finally did open the scoring with just one minute remaining in the period when Michael Caruso’s point shot was deflected by Denis Hollenstein past Pasquale after significant offensive zone pressure by the Storm. Shots on goal in the second period were 11-6 Guelph, as they led 1-0 heading into the final twenty minutes of play.

The Bulls were able to tie the score just before the four minute mark of the period while enjoying a two man power play advantage when Shawn Matthias’ cross-ice pass hit Bryan Cameron’s skate and deflected into the Storm net past McCollum. Matt Beleskey also assisted on Cameron’s third goal in as many games and 11th of the season. The assist also extended Beleskey’s point streak to eight games. The goal seemed to energize Belleville, as they started to take control of the game and limited the Storm to very little offensively. The Bulls took the lead with five minutes remaining in the game on a weird goal when Cameron’s shot attempt was blocked and went high into the air before deflecting off Andrew Self and then McCollum before going into the net. The goal was Self’s fourth of the season and turned out to be the game winner. Belleville was then able to hold off any late Storm attempts to tie the score including a power play in the final minute, as Pasquale and the defence were solid to preserve the victory. Shots on goal in the third period were 11-5 Belleville but overall favoured the Storm 25-20.

Pasquale was excellent in goal for the Bulls, making 24 saves to earn his fourth victory of the season while McCollum was also strong, turning aside 18 Belleville shots in the loss. Neither power play was able to generate much, as the Bulls finished one for seven with the man advantage while holding Guelph scoreless in six power play chances. The three stars of the game were Cameron, Caruso, and P.K. Subban. With the win, the Bulls record improves to 15-5-2-1 while Guelph drops to 8-13-3-0 with the loss. Belleville will now finish their busy weekend Saturday night when they travel to Owen Sound to face the Attack. The next home game for the Bulls is next Saturday night when they will play host to the Brampton Battalion. Game time is 7:15pm at the Yardmen Arena and tickets are available at the Bulls Box Office.
