Bulls Terrific in 11-2 Victory over Kingston
Keaton Turkiewicz had three goals and four points in the Belleville Bulls 11-2 victory over the Kingston Frontenacs Saturday night at the Yardmen Arena.
The Belleville Bulls continued their early season dominance of the Kingston Frontenacs, scoring early and often in an 11-2 victory Saturday night at the Yardmen Arena. The Bulls have now outscored Kingston 19-3 in the two meetings between the two sides this year. The Bulls used a five goal first period to build an early lead and cruise to their first home victory of the season.
The Bulls opened the scoring just four and a half minutes into the first period when Eric Tangradi skated into the Kingston zone and snapped a hard shot from the slot that beat Kingston goaltender Daryl Borden for his first goal of the season. Shawn Lalonde earned the lone assist on the goal. Just 50 seconds later, Belleville went ahead 2-0 when Keaton Turkiewicz one-timed a Shawn Matthias pass from the slot past Borden. Cory Tanaka also assisted on Turkiewicz’s second goal of the season. The Bulls went ahead 3-0 midway through the period on a two man advantage when P.K. Subban’s bullet shot from the point beat Borden cleanly. Tangradi and Lalonde assisted on Subban’s second goal of the season. Three minutes later, Belleville increased their lead further on another power play when Bryan Cameron fired the puck into the empty goal after Borden could not handle the rebound from a Matt Beleskey shot. Tangradi also assisted on the goal. Tangradi scored his second of the game less than two minutes later to round of the first period scoring when he broke in down the wing and fired a low, hard shot past Borden to give the Bulls a 5-0 lead after twenty minutes of play. Shots on goal in the first period were 20-9 for Belleville.
Belleville’s offensive barrage continued just over one minute into the second period when a Tanaka pass hit Turkiewicz’s skate as he drove towards the Kingston net and deflected past Borden. Matthias also earned an assist on Turkiewicz’s second goal of the game and third of the season. Matthias then made the second 7-0 with the Bulls third power play goal of the game six minutes into the period when he fired a loose puck at the side of the net over the shoulder of Borden. Turkiewicz and Tanaka assisted on Matthias’ fourth goal of the season. Kingston finally got on the scoreboard midway through the second period when Bobby Mignardi picked up a loose puck in the slot and quickly fired a shot between the pads of Belleville goaltender Mike Murphy. The Bulls quickly got that goal back less than three minutes later while shorthanded when Tanaka stole the puck at the Bulls blueline and skated in on an odd man rush before finding Beleskey alone in the slot with a perfect pass. Beleskey hammered the puck past Borden for his fourth goal of the season, as the Bulls led 8-1 after two periods. Shots on goal in the second period favoured Kingston 13-10. Murphy was very strong during the second period, making several very good saves to keep Belleville’s large lead intact.
Turkiewicz completed his hat-trick one and a half minutes into the third period just after a Bulls penalty had expired when his cross-ice pass hit the skate of a Kingston defender and deflected past Borden. Tanaka and Matthias assisted on Turkiewicz’s fourth goal of the season. Midway through the period, Tangradi completed his hat-trick when he broke down the wing and snapped a low, hard shot that eluded Borden. Subban earned the lone assist on Tangradi’s third goal of the year. The Bulls then increased their lead to 11-1 with just under five minutes remaining in the period when Brendan Taylor picked up a loose puck at the side of the net and fired a quick shot top corner from in tight. Tyler Randell and Stephen Johnston assisted on the goal. The assist was the first career OHL point for Johnston. Kingston rounded out the scoring with just over one minute remaining when Stephen Francella tipped a cross-ice pass from Josh Brittain over top of Murphy for his first career OHL goal. Shots on goal in the third period were 16-11 Kingston but overall favoured the Bulls 41-38.
Several Bulls had huge offensive nights in the win, as Tangradi and Tanaka led the way with five points each. Turkiewicz and Matthias each had four points while Subban and Beleskey chipped in with three points apiece. Matthias now leads the OHL in scoring with 12 points in three games while Beleskey is close behind with 11 points. Murphy played an extremely strong game in goal for the Bulls, stopping 36 shots in the win while Borden made 30 saves in a losing effort for the Frontenacs. The Bulls finished the game three for nine on the power play while holding Kingston scoreless in seven chances with the man advantage. The three stars of the game were Tangradi, Tanaka, and Turkiewicz. The Bulls will now enjoy another week off before they continue their four game home stand with a match-up with the Saginaw Spirit at the Yardmen Arena next Saturday night. Game time is 7:15pm and tickets are available at the Bulls Box Office.
