Late Goal Propels Bulls to Victory in Kingston
Shawn Lalonde had a goal and an assist to help pace the Belleville Bulls to a 4-3 victory over the Kingston Frontenacs Friday night in Kingston.
Bryan Cameron’s power play goal with just 68 seconds remaining in the third period broke a 3-3 deadlock and lifted the Belleville Bulls to their fourth consecutive victory, as they defeated the Kingston Frontenacs 4-3 Friday night in Kingston. The win improves the Bulls record to a perfect 4-0 against Kingston this season, as they reclaim second place in the East Division.
The Bulls came out flying to start the game, forcing Kingston goaltender Jason Guy to make several outstanding saves to keep the game scoreless. Slowly, the Frontenacs worked themselves back into the game and forced Bulls goaltender Mike Murphy to be sharp. The Bulls were able to open the scoring with eight and a half minutes remaining in the first period when Brendan Taylor found Matt Beleskey alone in the slot with a nice pass that the Bulls Captain took before snapping a shot past Guy for his sixth goal of the season. The first period ended with the Bulls ahead 1-0 thanks in large part to some strong goaltending by Murphy and Guy. Shots on goal in the period were 16-15 Belleville.
It was Kingston who came out strong to begin the second period and were rewarded with two quick goals. The Frontenacs tied the score three minutes into the period when Nathan Moon’s pass on an odd man rush hit a Bulls defender and deflected past Murphy. Bobby Mignardi then gave Kingston their only lead of the night a minute and a half later when he one-timed a Andris Dzerins pass from behind the net past Murphy. Following the second Kingston goal, the Bulls seemed to settle down and the two sides played some entertaining end to end hockey. The Bulls were able to tie the score with just less than six minutes remaining in the second period when call-up Luke Judson took a hit just after making a nice pass to Shawn Lalonde. Lalonde then skated into the Kingston zone and fired a shot top corner past Guy for his first goal of the season. The Bulls then took the lead with just 21 seconds remaining in the period when Eric Tangradi came out of the penalty box to join Cory Tanaka on a two on one rush. Tanaka showed great patience before firing a pass to Tangradi that the Bulls forward was able to take and beat Guy with a quick shot to give the Bulls a 3-2 lead heading into the final twenty minutes of play. Shots on goal in the second period were 13-9 in favour of the Bulls.
The Frontenacs tied the score just before the eight minute mark of the third period on the power play when Jesse Brown tipped a Ben Shutron point shot. Following the tying goal, both teams traded chances but both Guy and Murphy were strong to keep the game tied late into the final frame. The game appeared headed towards overtime until Moon took a penalty in the final two minutes of the period and the Bulls power play made Kingston pay. Cameron scored the winning goal when he was able to pick up a loose puck in the slot and turn and fire the puck past Guy. Lalonde earned the lone assist on Cameron’s fifth goal of the season. Kingston did press in the final moments of the game for the tying goal including hitting the goalpost in the dying seconds but were unable to even the game, as the Bulls skated away with the 4-3 win. Shots on goal in the third period were 11-7 Kingston but overall favoured the Bulls 36-35.
Murphy enjoyed another excellent game stopping 32 shots to earn his fifth victory of the season. Guy was also strong, making 32 saves in a losing effort for Kingston. The Bulls finished the game one for four on the power play while Kingston scored once in five chances with the man advantage. The three stars of the game were Lalonde, Cameron, and Cory Emmerton who had two assists for the Frontenacs. With the win, the Bulls improve their record to 5-1-0-0 while Kingston drops to 2-6-0-1 with the defeat. The Bulls will now look to continue their winning ways Saturday night when they play host to the Peterborough Petes. Belleville will then wrap up their busy weekend Sunday afternoon in Brampton against the Battalion. Saturday’s game is a 7:15pm start at the Yardmen Arena and tickets for the game are available at the Bulls Box Office. Fans attending Saturday’s game will also have another opportunity to quality for the Belleville Bulls McDougall Insurance Million Dollar Shootout.
