Alumni Watch: Former Bull Mike Mole Earns NHL Call-Up

Former Belleville Bulls goaltender Mike Mole was called-up by the New York Islanders earlier this week. Mole served as a backup for Wade Dubielewicz on Friday night and is expected to remain with the team for the rest of the season. If Mole does see game action with the Islanders, he will become just the fourth goaltender in Bulls history to play in the NHL, joining Craig Billington, Darren Pang, and Derek Wilkinson.

Mole played two seasons with the Bulls from 2001-2003 after being acquired in a trade with the Mississauga IceDogs. Mole compiled an impressive 45-27-7 record in Belleville along with a 2.79 goals against average, .911 save percentage and three shutouts. He had held the Bulls team mark for lowest goals against average and highest save percentage in a single season before both records were broken by Mike Murphy this year.  Mole was also selected as the OHL’s Humanitarian of the Year during the 2002-2003 season and was named the Bulls regular season and playoff MVP in 2001-2002.

Following his time in the OHL, Mole spent two very successful seasons at St. Francis Xavier University where he helped lead the X-Men to a national championship in 2004. Mole was named the MVP of the 2004 CIS National Tournament and an All-Canadian in 2005. Following the 2004-2005 season, Mole participated in the CBC television series ‘Making the Cut’ and was one of six players to earn an NHL tryout.

Mole began his professional career in 2005 and spent the 2005-2006 season in the ECHL with the Phoenix Roadrunners and the San Diego Gulls. He was then signed by the Islanders prior to the 2006-2007 season and has split time between the ECHL and AHL since then. Prior to his call-up, Mole held an 18-13-5 record along with a 3.29 GAA and .897SV% with the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies this season.
